Creating a new page

As you get started with your new business you may find the need to create new/custom pages for your website. Examples of this can include pages for your contact information, sales and promotions, policies, and any other information that you wish to convey to your visitors. In fact, we highly recommend that you spend some time coming up with custom content for your websites. Adding content to your website not only helps personalize it but it also creates additional information for search engines to consume.

For those of you that are looking to really improve your search engine ranking, be sure to add our Wordpress blog service to your turnkey adult website. You can read about the importance of blogging in our article Blogs: The Best SEO Tool for Small Businesses.

For this tutorial, we’ll be creating a new page for our demo website. We’ve just started our new business and want to put up some contact information in the form of a “Contact Us” page. We’ll be placing the link for this contact page after our “Home” link within our top panel (see red “X” in image below).

We'll be creating a "Contact Us" page and placing the link to it after our "Home" link.

We'll be creating a "Contact Us" page and placing the link to it after our "Home" link.

Follow the steps below to create your new page:

  1. Login to your control panel.
  2. Click on the “Content” button.

Click on the "Content" button in your Control Panel

Click on the "Content" button in your Control Panel

  3. Click on “Create New Page” from the “Manage Pages” screen.
  4. Enter a name for your new page. This name will be used as the link for this page in our menu.

Enter a name for your new page and the content that is to appear on it.

Enter a name for your new page and the content that is to appear on it.

  5. Use the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor (see image above) to enter content for you page. This content will appear as the body of the page when viewed. Simply input and style content as you would in any word processor. If you’re an advanced user, you can enter your own custom HTML and Javascript into this form. Simply input your code into the “code view” of the WYSIWYG editor or use the provided “Javascript/HTML” field (above).
  6. Assign the page to a panel (i.e. menu). This is where you would like this page to appear. We want our page to appear in our top horizontal panel so we’ll be selecting “Header Menu” from the dropdown list.

Assign page to a panel and set page order (if required)

Assign page to a panel and set page order (if required)

  7. Select an order for this page (see image above). Ordering applies to pages when generating a menu. You may wish to have a page appear before another in a given menu. Simply select a number relative to the other pages in the same panel (menu) to force a custom page order. Otherwise, leave this value at zero and your pages will be ordered alphabetically. Since we want our “Contact Us” link to appear after our “Home” link, we’ll be entering an order of “1” into the “Order” field (since our homepage currently has an order of “0” assigned to it). This will force our “Contact Us” link to appear after our “Home” link.
  8. It’s highly recommended that you enter some metadata for your new page. Metadata is used by search engines and directories (among others) to determine relevance of your page to a given query. Actually, metadata isn’t the sole determining factor as there are many other involved, but metadata can be used to influence these results. This step is optional but it will help search engines better index your pages. Click on the “Metadata” tab if you wish to enter some metadata for your new page. Otherwise, skip to step 12.

Add some metadata to your page.

Add some metadata to your page.

  9. Enter a “Meta Title” for you page. This is simply the title of the page as it should appear to search engines and users. You can simply use the name of the page that you created in step 4 or you can create a more descriptive title for your page using this field.

Enter some metadata for your page. Enter a title, description and keywords.

Enter some metadata for your page. Enter a title, description and keywords.

  10. Enter a “Meta Description” for your page (see image above). This should be a paragraph containing a description of your new page. This description may be used by search engines while displaying search results to a visitor so ensure that it properly describes your new page.
  11. Use the “Meta Keywords” field to enter keywords that describe this page (see image above). Delimit keywords by a comma or space and keep this list short. Do not repeat keywords excessively as this won’t provide any additional benefit and may be seen as keyword spam. You should use keywords that actually appear within your title and page content. Truthfully, the impact of this field in major search engines is believed to be minimal. However, other smaller engines and directories may still use these keywords so be sure spend a little time on these.
  12. Click “Save” to create your new page.

Your newly saved page will appear under your control panel.

Your newly saved page will appear under your control panel.

  13. Visit your website to confirm that your new page appears as desired and in the correct place.

Confirm that your new page is where it should be and looks the way it was intended.

Confirm that your new page is where it should be and looks the way it was intended.

You can create as many pages as you need and assign them to any of your panels. The WYSIWYG editor provides you with a lot of functions to help you get your pages looking the way you want them to. We’ll be covering features of the editor in more detail in separate posts, in the meantime, feel free to play around with it.

Understanding your website layout

This post is aimed at helping you understand your website layout. Your shop layout consists of two major components–panels and pages–that can be created and modified through your control panel. These components are the building blocks of your website and will help you create and place content within your website layout. The image below highlights these components.

Panels and pages are the main components of your website layout.

Panels and pages are the main components of your website layout.

The following are definitions of each component:

Panels:

A panel is pane that can be aligned to the top, left, right or bottom sides of your page. In the image above, boxes #1-5 are all panels. Panels can contain menus, text, images, scripts or custom code. You can create any number of panels and they can be ordered relative to their alignment. Panels that have pages assigned to them will automatically generate a menu containing the names of all assigned pages (see #3). Once created, a panel will appear on all of your pages (both new and existing).

Pages:

Your website content is based on pages which convey information to your visitors. Our system will auto-generate all product and category pages for you and fill them with the appropriate content. But in addition to your product and category pages, you may wish to create custom pages for your shop that provide your visitors with important company information (i.e. contact, returns, policies, etc) or related content such as promotions. Whenever you want to add some content to your shop, you’ll likely want to create a new page.

Your visitors can find your pages by navigating menus on your website (see #3). Whenever you create a page, you will be asked to assign it to a panel. This will ensure that your page appears within an auto-generated menu in your selected panel.

Once you get your head around panels and pages, you’ll be able to create and modify shop content with ease.

New turnkey software released! Version 4.0

We’re proud to announce that we’ve just released the final version of our new turnkey adult software (version 4.0). It’s been over six months of hard work but we’re finally here. Version 4.0 is a complete rewrite from the ground up and comes with many changes and improvements. We’ve focused on making things easier to use and made big changes to help our system align better with the needs of the dropship business and affiliate business models.

Here’s a brief list of some of the main changes and improvements:

  • We’ve completely redesigned our control panel. We wanted to make our software easier than ever so we’ve cleaned up the control panel and consolidated features. Our goal was to create something that was quick and simple to learn so that you can focus on running your business.
    Turnkey Adult Website Control Panel

    Turnkey Adult Website Control Panel

  • Completely redesigned shop themes. Our graphic designers have created themes that are both attractive and functional. It is a well know fact that customers are more willing to purchase from a website that looks professionally designed. Your website is your first impression and we’ve ensured that it looks great!

We have completely redesigned our themes. Plenty of color options to choose from or create your own.

We have completely redesigned our themes. Plenty of color options to choose from or create your own.

Select from any of our readymade themes from your control panel and apply them with the click of a button! We're always improving our software and any new themes that we create will automatically become available to you here.

Choose from any of our readymade themes and apply them with the click of a button! We're always improving our software and any new themes that we create will automatically become available to you in your control panel.

  • All themes are now XHTML 1.1 STRICT compliant. This probably doesn’t mean much to many of you but XHTML 1.1 STRICT compliance is currently the highest level of compliance your website markup can obtain. Why is this important? Website layouts that are standards complaint will appear more consistently across all browsers and operating systems. They also tend to load much quicker as the browser is able to render the content more efficiently. We’ve tested our themes extensively to ensure that all of your potential customers receive a consistent shopping experience–no matter which browser or operating system they choose to run. You can rest easy knowing that you won’t lose any potential customers due to visual or operational issues.

All themes are now XHTML 1.1 STRICT compliant

All themes are now XHTML 1.1 STRICT compliant

  • We now manage your product data! This is by far the largest change that we’ve made this time around. All product data and images have been centralized to ensure that your shop is always up to date. You no longer have to update your own data-we’ll do it for you! Your turnkey adult website will update automatically when new products or updates are published to the central database. Be sure that any service provider you are contemplating offers this service. Why? Because you may end up receiving orders from customers only to find out that the product has long been discontinued or is out of stock due to an outdated product database. Having to deny customers or cancel orders won’t do very well for your reputation as a new business.
  • Our themes are still created with fully automated SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in mind. What good is an online business if no one can find you? All of our URLs are search engine optimized and include keywords unique to each and every page of your website. Meta tags are auto-generated for all products and categories and our control panel will allow you to modify meta tags and other HTML tags for any portion of your custom pages. And our XHTML 1.1 STRICT compliance ensures that we don’t skimp out on important SEO tags. Our new flexible and fully customizable themes will allow SEO specialists and advanced users to further tweak any of your pages to help you target any given keyword and ultimately perform better than your competition.
  • We now feature exact shipping rate calculation! No more guessing or providing flat rates. Your shipping rates will calculate exactly to those of your dropshipper. This will ensure that you do not lose any profit to shipping and will also ensure that your customers are not overbilled or scared away from bloated shipping rates.
  • Our new system has been completely redesigned from the ground up to align with the needs of a dropship or affiliate business.
  • We’ve introduced a new product attribute system. This feature is still new and somewhat experimental but we like the results so far. Your shops will now allow your customers to browse by category or narrow their results by attributes or filters. What does this mean? Imagine that you have a category full of t-shirts. Normally, a customer would have to browse through the entire category to find what they’re looking for. Our new attribute system allows your customers to now browse this category by size, color, style, etc (where applicable). This is very much the practice used by all large online retails and a must for modern-day e-commerce shops. We are likely the only dropship turnkey adult website vendor that offers this feature!

Allow your customers to narrow their results by product attributes!

Allow your customers to narrow their results by product attributes! (see red border)

  • We’ve improved shop performance with a newly designed template system focused on efficiency and better caching. Our fully automated caching system will ensure that your shop does not waste time loading redundant or unchanged data from your database. This should result in faster load times for your pages and ensure that your customers stay on your website.
  • We know that everyone hates reading user manuals (including ourselves). That’s why we’ve integrated our user manual directly into your control panel. If you’re ever in doubt about what a specific function does, simply hover over the question mark next to that field to find out. We’ll also be adding tutorials here on our blog to help you out with specific tasks. And remember, our support desk is always available for any software related issues that you may have.

The user manual is now integrated into our control panel. Hover over the question mark next to any field to find out what it does.

The user manual is now integrated into our control panel. Hover over the question mark next to any field to find out what it does.

  • Customers are no longer required to sign up for an account prior to purchase. In fact, we’ve removed the account feature altogether. Research shows that the majority of customers prefer not to have to create an account to make a purchase. It’s okay for a large retailer to do it but for smaller shops, it’s just another password that the customer will soon forget. It’s also an additional step and hassle for your customers that can result in abandoned carts. Don’t worry, you can still search your customers and invoices, they just don’t need an account anymore to make a purchase.

Adult Turnkey Depot @ AVN / AEE 2010 Las Vegas

Well this is a bit of an off-topic post but we thought we’d share some of our pics from this year’s AVN / AEE 2010 in Las Vegas. For those that may not know, AVN (Adult Video News) or AEE (Adult Entertainment Expo) is one of the largest adult industry trade shows of its kind. It’s a gathering of performers and companies from all corners of the adult industry. The show is attended by everyone from performers, adult product manufacturers, video producers and of course the fans. It’s a fun time but most importantly it’s a great way to see what others are up to and an opportunity to make some new contacts. We met a lot of people and we’re excited to see what new turnkey business offerings we can bring to you in 2010! We highly recommend you check it out if you ever get a chance. The show occurs yearly in early January in Las Vegas.

Anyway, here’s a sampling of some pics from our visit to AVN / AEE 2010. You can view the entire collection of pics from our trip on our Flickr Photostream.

Search Engine Optimization – Targeting the right keyword

One of the biggest mistakes many new turnkey adult website owners make is not targeting any keywords or targeting the wrong keywords. In this post, we’ll look at what keywords are and how to select the right keyword to target for your business.

What are keywords and why do we need to target them?

When a user conducts a search through a search engine, they type in words or phrases to find what they are looking for. These words or phrases are what we consider keywords. For example, a user might type in “lingerie” or “sexy lingerie” when conducting their search for lingerie. The keywords here are either “lingerie” or “sexy lingerie”. Notice that a keyword can consist of more than one word so from our previous example, “sexy lingerie” is actually considered a single keyword. By targeting a keyword, you are putting your efforts into having a search engine return your website as a relevant result for a given keyword. Selecting the right keyword(s) to target is paramount in building a successful online business.

Why is it important to target a keyword?

When a search engine indexes your website, it scans your pages (among other things) for keywords in an effort to determine the topic of your website/pages. Without a strong focus on any keywords, you leave it to the search engine to decide what information on your pages is important and what isn’t. As a result, it’s important to influence the outcome of this decision by “helping” the search engine pick the right keywords that describe your content. And by doing so, you have a better chance of your website being returned as a relevant search result for your targeted keyword.

It’s important to understand that you can’t expect your website to show up for every search query relating to your website’s topic. The web is huge and there are millions of sites competing for the same keywords. Instead, you need to focus your efforts on targeting one or a few keywords for which you would like to see your website returned as a search result. Furthermore, you want your website to appear on the first page of that query as most users will likely make their selection here. This is no simple task so by focusing your efforts on just one or a handful of keywords, you’ll find that you have a much better chance at achieving this goal.

Selecting the right keyword

Okay, so you’re ready to get going but how do you select the right keyword? This is going to require some research on your end to determine and there are tools and services available to help you with this decision. You can use tools like the Google Keyword Tool to determine exactly how many people actually search for a given keyword per month to find out if it’s worth targeting. The important thing to remember here is that it’s better to target a niche keyword that has fewer searches per month (but still enough to sustain a profitable business) than a keyword that has a lot of searches per month and way too much competition. The exact number of searches per month that is acceptable is something that you’ll have to determine for yourself but generally any keyword that has anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand searches per month is an ideal target. Why? Because there is less competition for these keywords and your chances of obtaining a first page ranking are much more likely than they would be for a keyword with heavy competition. Plus, a few hundred to a few thousand interested buyers to your website per month is still very appealing!

I’m going to run through an example of selecting a keyword in this post so I’ll be using our lingerie shop as a visual aid to picking out a keyword worth targeting. The obvious keywords here would be “lingerie” or “sexy lingerie” but if we look at the level of competition for these keywords it quickly becomes apparent that this would be a futile effort for a small start-up or part-time business. Instead, we need to focus on something with less competition and something that we can achieve in a much shorter period of time and with a smaller budget. So lets try a different keyword that is more specific or targeted to a niche. We’ll begin with Google’s Keyword Tool and enter a few keywords that come to mind. The best part about this tool is that it’ll provide us with related search terms so that we can get some ideas of what people are searching for.

  1. Go to the Google Keyword Tool
  2. Under “Descriptive words or phrases” we’ll be adding some keywords that I’ve come up with that describe our lingerie business. I’ll be using the keywords “sexy lingerie”, “erotic lingerie”, “romantic lingerie” and “sexy adult lingerie”. Be sure to enter only one keyword/phrase per line and make sure the appropriate region that you wish to target is selected. If you’re targeting everyone, leave the region setting as-is, Google’s tool will provide global keyword results in addition to that of your selected region. Now, click on “Get keyword ideas” to have Google’s tool generate a list of related keywords along with their monthly search volume.
    Google Keyword Tool

    Google Keyword Tool

  3. Analyze the list of keywords returned by Google’s keyword tool. Remember, keywords with a large monthly search volume will be accompanied by fierce competition. We want to find something that still has a valuable monthly search volume but at the same time doesn’t carry a high level of competition. When selecting a keyword, I usually target something that has under 10,000 searches per month. In fact, I normally prefer something between 500-5000 searches per month because getting to the top for such a keyword can prove to me much more easier due to the reduced competition.

Lets have a look at our results. It looks like I lucked out, two out of four of my keywords have a reasonable monthly search volume both locally and globally. Forget about “sexy lingerie” and “erotic lingerie”, based on the monthly search volume of those keywords it looks like there’s going to be way too much competition. I’m also not liking any of the other suggestions provided by Google’s tool so I’m going to pass up on those (but be sure to have a look at those when you’re conducting your own searches). So far, “romantic lingerie” and “sexy adult lingerie” look like the clear winners. I’m leaning towards “sexy adult lingerie” but lets hold off on making that decision right now as we still have a little research to do.

    Google Keyword Tool

    Google Keyword Tool

  4. The next thing we want to do is enter our selected keywords into Google so that we can analyze the results that are returned. We do this to ensure that our keyword is returning the results that we’re expecting (i.e. other lingerie shops or competing businesses). If it isn’t, then it’s likely that we haven’t selected a good keyword to target.

Lets enter both of our keywords into Google separately. Remember, when entering the keyword into Google you should enclose it with quotation marks to tell Google that we’re looking for that exact term. If we don’t enclose our keyword in quotes, Google will treat each word in our keyword as a separate keyword which will skew our results significantly.

Searching for an exact match in Google

Searching for an exact match in Google

This will also give us an idea of how many results are returned for our keyword. While this doesn’t mean that each of the websites returned is a competitor, it does show the number of results that we’ll have to overcome. Ideally, you want this number to be in the thousands, not millions. If you followed the instructions for selecting a keyword above, you shouldn’t be running into this problem here.

Google results for exact match search

Google results for exact match search

After conducting a search for both of my keywords on Google, I’m happy with the results that I’m seeing. Both keywords have returned competing lingerie businesses and not an excessive amount of results. I’ve decided to go ahead with the keyword “sexy adult lingerie” since it has less than half the results returned by “romantic lingerie”.

  5. The next thing we want to determine is the direct competition for our selected keyword. What I mean by this is businesses considered to be actively targeting our keyword. Remember, this isn’t an exact science and others may have different views or ways of measuring direct competition so feel free to use whatever techniques you feel comfortable with. We’ll consider a website that has our keyword (verbatim) within the title tag, as an anchor (hyperlink) and somewhere within their page to be a direct competitor for the keyword. We can determine this buy using Google search operators with our keyword. Enter the following line into Google for our selected keyword to determine how much direct competition we have:

intext:”sexy adult lingerie” inanchor:”sexy adult lingerie” intitle:”sexy adult lingerie”

From our results, we can see we have a total of 6 direct competitors for our keyword based on our definition of a direct competitor. This is excellent and I’m happy with the results. I’ve made the final decision to use “sexy adult lingerie” as the keyword that I plan to actively target.

    Direct competitors for our keyword

    Direct competitors for our keyword

From here, you’ll want to look at our tutorial on creating backlinks and you’ll also want to start using this keyword throughout your website where possible. But be aware that simply loading your pages with this keyword repetitively isn’t going to get you the results that you want. You need to use the keyword legitimately where applicable without it looking like keyword spam. Start off by putting the keyword in the title of all of your pages then work on inserting it within descriptive text on your homepage or other pages. B sure to use your selected keyword when creating backlinks as well. And finally, be patient. You won’t see results right away, this is a slow process that will take some time and practice. If done correctly, you can expect to see some results within the first 3 months.

Note: This post is specific to Google but much of your efforts here will effect all other major search engines.

Integrating Google Analytics with your website

Before you start any advertising or marketing campaigns for your turnkey adult website, you should consider setting up a Google Analytics account.

What is Google Analytics?

Straight from the Analytics website:

Google Analytics is the enterprise-class web analytics solution that gives you rich insights into your website traffic and marketing effectiveness. Powerful, flexible and easy-to-use features now let you see and analyze your traffic data in an entirely new way. With Google Analytics, you’re more prepared to write better-targeted ads, strengthen your marketing initiatives and create higher converting websites.

Why is it important to integrate Google Analytics with your website?

This is important because it can help you understand which of your advertising efforts are paying off so that you can focus your energy on the appropriate methods for your business. It also happens to be completely free of charge!

Blogs: The Best SEO Tool for Small Businesses

So you’ve decided that you want to try running a small business and you’re ready to give a turnkey adult website a try. Great! But how do you start making some money? Well, lets back up a bit and determine what we need to make that money. In order for your turnkey adult website to start generating revenue, your website needs visitors… lots of visitors. Some of those visitors might then be converted into paying customers and that’s when you start to make money. But how do you get these visitors? This is the question that most small internet-based businesses fail to answer. Blogging can be the answer to obtaining the visitors that you need to make your business profitable. Blogs are a cost-effective method of reaching more potential customers in a manner that may not seem obvious until you fully understand it.

What is a blog?

In case you don’t already know, here’s the definition of a blog straight from Wikipedia:

A blog (a contraction of the term “web log”) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.

How can a blog help you attract more visitors?

Blogs naturally tend to attract a lot of search engine traffic. As a result, businesses that maintain a blog tend to receive more visitors to their main website than they otherwise would receive through search engines alone. Why?

  • A blog can easily add to the page count of your website and provide additional content for search engines to consume. This increases your searchable content and increases the potential of your website or blog being returned in more search results.
  • Blogs can help you grow your inbound links or backlinks (i.e. other websites linking to your website) which can help you increase your pagerank and performance in search engines. This might occur if someone finds one or more of your blog entries useful and decides to provide a link to that entry from their own blog or website.
  • A blog can provide your business with a space to post useful/helpful or even off-topic information that might otherwise not be appropriate for your main website. Again, this information can be consumed by search engines with the potential of driving visitors via related search queries.
  • A blog can provide an informal/casual discussion forum for your business in which to deliver information and to learn from your customers. This might bring visitors back to your website more often for updated content or discussions.
  • Anyone looking to increase their visitor count and overall search engine performance should seriously consider blogging as a possible solution. While a blog will add to your weekly workload, the benefits are much too important to pass by. Adult Turnkey Depot provides a blogging package for all of its turnkey adult websites. For a small additional fee, you’ll receive a fully operational blog linked to your website completely setup and ready-to-go. A blog can be added to your website at anytime but we recommend getting one started early on so your website can benefit from the added potential of search engine traffic.
